Introduction

GENERAL SUMMARY
This position would play and integral role in keeping Days Not Final Billed down to a minimum. Tracking of DNFB, AR and Bill Hold amounts will be reported daily to HIM Director. Coder will also work with members of the revenue cycle to make continual quality improvement. This position is responsible for coding (inpatient, outpatient, interventional radiology, and cardiac cath lab). The Lead Coder will accurately code hospital procedures for physicians following guidelines to ensure proper code assignment of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT codes. During keying Lead Coder would look for any discrepancies and avenues to prevent denials. Lead Coder would also key ICD-10 codes found on physician orders into the electronic health record. Under general supervision Lead Coder will review, analyze and assure the final diagnoses and procedures as stated by the practicing providers are valid and complete. Lead Coder will confirm DRG and APC assignment, utilizing all available resources to assure optimal reimbursement, while maintaining the integrity of the code assignment. Lead Coder would present queries to physicians to provide additional information for accurate coding. Lead Coder will function in HIM Director’s absence.

Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Codes inpatient/outpatient accounts.
• Confirms DRG and APC assignment.
• Queries physicians whenever necessary.
• Reviews, analyzes and assures the final diagnoses and procedures are entered.
• Inputs charges into grouper.
• Daily reports DNFB, AR days, and bill hold amount directly to HIM Director.
• Work closely with Revenue Cycle staff to prevent and keep denials down to a minimum.
• Other duties as assigned/ required.

Required Qualifications

AHIMA or AAPC, NHA Certified
CBCS, CCA, CCS, RHIA, RHIT
Experience using ICD-10-CM
Two years’ experience using ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCs or equivalency.
Computer competency
3M proficient

Compensation/Benefits

Hourly rate of pay is determined by years of experience
