Introduction
Portland Community College’s Health Information Management (HIM) Program is a regional leader in educating the next generation of HIM professionals. We are currently looking for a full-time faculty member who has current content knowledge, is committed to culturally responsive teaching, and who can balance academics with practical application.
While HIM courses are primarily online, candidates must be available for routine on-campus activities at the Cascade Campus including student meetings, industry partner meetings, and other college and program functions. This position is anticipated to have program leadership and instructional responsibilities.

Job Description
This position will teach a full load of courses during fall, winter and spring terms. There may be opportunities for release time for department chair and/or program director functions.
Faculty are expected to be involved in community work, may be expected to advise students, coordinate professional practice sites, and other duties.
Although the program is fully online, a regular on-campus presence is expected for committee work, meeting with students, and coordinating tasks with other faculty. The majority of the students in the program are from the Portland metropolitan area.
Required Qualifications
Current credential as a Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator
Three (3) years’ work experience in the Health Information Management profession
Preferred Qualifications
These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.
Throughout the screening process, you will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these qualifications.
Demonstrated experience training or teaching students, staff, or co-workers from diverse backgrounds and with variable skill levels while giving constructive feedback (written or verbal).
Demonstrated experience with online learning as an instructor, trainer, or student.
Experience adapting practices (in teaching, training or communicating) to include a wide range of cultural knowledge, experiences, and perspectives.
Foundational understanding of medical coding
Demonstrated experience using electronic health records systems or related systems and broad knowledge of productivity applications including MS Office and Google Applications
Experience reading and interpreting health records, working with healthcare statistics and data analysis or quality improvement activities, along with the ability to communicate this with students
Education Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience – master’s degree preferred

Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($64,562) and Step 3 ($68,491) based on related experience, per PCC’s collective bargaining agreement. Advanced salary placement may be possible for candidates with significant experience.
PCC offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families, including domestic partners, with access to a broad range of benefit options. PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee’s Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.
Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.
Paid Leave:
1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
21 hours of additional personal leave per year
4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)
