Introduction

The Trauma Registrar is an integral member of the Trauma Program and its performance improvement initiatives. Under the direction of the Trauma Program Manager, the Trauma Registrar is responsible for abstraction, collection, coding, entry, and report generation of all data that is entered into the Trauma Registry as required by the State of Michigan, the National Trauma Data Bank, and the American College of Surgeons. The Trauma Registrar is tasked with concurrent abstraction and entry of accurate and valid data of all trauma patients at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland and ensuring that all records are completed within the mandated times set forth by the American College of Surgeons. The Trauma Registrar, in collaboration with the Michigan Trauma Total Quality Improvement Process (MTQI)P Clinical Reviewer, is also responsible for the abstraction and entry of all Trauma Quality Improvement Process (TQIP) and MTQIP data to the standards set forth by those value collaborative. The Trauma Registrar maintains patient confidentiality at all times in compliance with hospital policy and State and Federal regulations.

Job Description

***This position is a hybrid position. After training the employee will be eligible to work hybrid 50/50 onsite and remote.
The Trauma Registrar is an integral member of the Trauma Program and its performance improvement initiatives. Under the direction of the Trauma Program Manager, the Trauma Registrar is responsible for abstraction, collection, coding, entry, and report generation of all data that is entered into the Trauma Registry as required by the State of Michigan, the National Trauma Data Bank, and the American College of Surgeons. The Trauma Registrar is tasked with concurrent abstraction and entry of accurate and valid data of all trauma patients at MidMichigan Health subsidiaries as applicable and ensuring that all records are completed within the mandated times set forth by the American College of Surgeons. The Trauma Registrar, in collaboration with the Michigan Trauma Total Quality Improvement Process (MTQIP) Clinical Reviewer, is also responsible for the abstraction and entry of all Trauma Quality Improvement Process (TQIP) and MTQIP data to the standards set forth by those value collaborative. The Trauma Registrar maintains patient confidentiality at all times in compliance with hospital policy and State and Federal regulations. The Trauma Registrar will have a primary assignment and may be given other assignments or may be asked to cover other subsidiaries as determined by leadership. Travel may be required as determined by leadership.
(60%)* Performs concurrent and accurate data collection and entry into the Trauma Registry of all data elements mandated by the National Trauma Data Bank, TQIP, MTQIP, and the trauma program for all trauma patients at assigned MyMichigan Health subsidiary(ies).
(30%)* Analyzes patient data in order to properly code all patient diagnoses and procedures by using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10 or current version) and Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) guidelines.
(10%)* Ensures that all trauma patients’ data is entered into the Trauma Registry within an acceptable time frame that meets or exceeds regulatory expectations.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participates in quality assurance and improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection and timely submission of data according to State Trauma Registry and/or the American College of Surgeons. Resolves routine coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from the Trauma Program Manager when needed.
Participates in internal and external community outreach and injury prevention projects.
Participates in, and provides data/reports for, the Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) committee.
Generates reports and analyzes data at the request of the Trauma Program Manager and/or Trauma Medical Director for use in PIPS committee meetings.
Identifies medical complications and areas for performance improvement in patient care and reports them promptly to the Trauma Program Manager. Participates in continuing educational opportunities to maintain and expand Trauma Registry base knowledge and skill.
Provides registry analysis and reports at the request of medical personnel and medical staff at the approval of the Trauma Program Manager and/or Trauma Medical Director.
Submits registry data to the National Trauma Data Bank as required by the American College of Surgeons.
Submits registry data to the State of Michigan as required by designation standards. Submits registry data to MTQIP and TQIP as required.
Responsible for any additional duties assigned by the Trauma Program Manager within scope of ability and practice.
All other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
New hires and transfers must be RHIA or RHIT eligible and successfully complete the certification exam within 6 months of hire and maintain the certification to meet the requirements of the position.
Associates Degree required
Minimum of 2 years of related health care experience.
ICD-10 coding course, or current version, within one year of hire.
American Trauma Society Trauma Registrar Course, or State equivalent, within one year of hire. Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s Injury Scaling Course within one year of hire.
Must possess a high level of computer proficiency including advanced typing skills.
Previous experience and proficiency with Electronic Medical Records required.
Must possess proficient knowledge of medical terminology. Must possess strong interpersonal skills. Must possess or be willing to gain expertise in ICD-10 coding, AIS coding, E-Codes, and Injury Severity Scoring.
Must possess and demonstrate knowledge of basic human anatomy.

Paramedic certification or LPN licensure and/or Medical Coding experience preferred.
Data base registry experience preferred.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.  Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.  May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Sedentary.  Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
