The Director of Health Information Services is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Health Information Services Department.  Provides direct supervision and coordination of functions, including Medical information, Coding & Abstracting, Chart Completion and Release of Medical Information. Ensures timely, efficient, and quality performance.  Functions as liaison with Human Resources and Labor Relations relative to staff recruitment, development, performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.

Job Description

Provides prompt, effective communication to all internal and external customers. Courteous at all times.  Presents a positive attitude on a consistent basis.

Ensures compliance with all Steward policies and state/federal regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of Joint Commission standards and CMS regulations.

Fosters interdisciplinary, collaborative relationships within the department and the organization.

Responsible for direction and support of the Medical Record Department.

Works as a line manager who directs, plans, organizes and implements the daily activities of the Medical Records functions across the hospital.

Participates in the development and enforcement of health information management policies and procedures on information collection, verification, communication, confidentiality, security, storage, retrieval, and retention.

Provides training and education to the hospital’s employee’s in areas relevant to health information management and registration policies and procedures.

Oversees day-to-day activities of medical record coders and ensures that DNFB is maintained within targets.

Serves as a local expert on all matters relating to health information management.

Compiles and reports on the status of record completion compliance and quality improvement activities related to health information management.

Actively participates in all required committees.

Oversees daily activities of Revenue Cycle Coordinator and assists in problem-solving on revenue cycle issues.

Oversees release of information process in conjunction with vendor.

Provides initial orientation and privacy training to all employees.

Oversees patient amendment requests of protected health information.

Serves as a member of the hospital’s Corporate Compliance Committee.


Required Qualifications

Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) required and 3-5 years supervisory experience in HIM.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of patient registration and HIPAA Privacy Rule is preferred.

Education Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Administration.
