Job Description

Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute (SWVMHI), part of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s behavioral health system, is seeking a qualified candidate for a Health Information Management (HIM) Director to manage and supervise the HIM Department and the Patient Registration Office, and to facilitate the maintenance and confidentiality of patient records. The Health Information Management Department is committed to providing the highest quality of service to our patients, physicians, staff, and other healthcare information users by ensuring the accurate, dependable and secure collection, maintenance and appropriate dissemination of information.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies required to successfully perform the work:
– Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations governing a hospital Health Information Management Department.
– Knowledge of state and federal requirements regarding confidentiality of patient information, rules and regulations for processing medical records and diagnosis coding systems.
– Demonstrated ability to compile, evaluate, and use statistical information, implement training programs and supervise employees.
– Demonstrated ability to interpret complex laws, rules and regulations governing the maintenance of medical records and release of confidential patient information.
– Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
– Will be point person for issues with the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system for data mining and collection and documentation.
– Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

Required Qualifications

– Graduation from an accredited college in Health Information Administration, or equivalent experience.

– Certification by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) either as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

– Experience supervising a Health Information Management Department or unit.

– Must have extensive operational knowledge of electronic health records and implementation.

Preferred Qualifications

– Graduation from an accredited college in Health Information Administration is preferred.

Education Qualifications

– Certification by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) either as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
