Introduction

We are a not-for-profit community healthcare system, providing advanced healthcare and wellness services from more than 35 locations across a three-county region of Western North Carolina. Our family of services includes hospitals, skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers, a wellness center, home health care, and a continuing care retirement community. Nearly 100 primary care physicians, physician specialists and nurse practitioners in the Blue Ridge Medical Group combine with other physicians on the Medical Staff to serve patients in the region.
UNC Health Blue Ridge is also a teaching system. Our two hospitals provide graduate medical education programs for medical school graduates and students in osteopathic medicine.

Job Description

Sign On Bonus of $5,000.00  POSITION IS A FULLY REMOTE POSITION.
JOB SUMMARY:
The DRG Validation Coder is responsible for inpatient coding utilizing the ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and
UNC Blue Ridge Clinical Criteria with established coding guidelines for accurate data capture and optimal reimbursement.
Responsible for helping to improve documentation through provider feedback, education, providing expert coding guidance and training to other UNC Blue Ridge facilities and departments, and Medical Staff members, and assisting CDI and other coding duties as requested. Facilitates appropriate MS-DRG for inpatient medical records using 3M Encoder, Coding Reference, CMS References and other Coding/Documentation Resources and References. Follows UHDDS and other facility guidelines for coding and reporting.
Meets established quality and productivity standards. Stay abreast of coding principles and regulatory guidelines related to inpatient coding. Works closely with CDI and Quality to identify trends in provider documentation or registration errors that affect Quality
Reporting data. Also works closely with Patient Financial Services, Access Management, the RAC Coordinator, and other Regulatory and Compliance reviewers as needed to resolve coding, billing, and patient type issues as needed. Participates in or leads A3 completion(s) and presentation(s). Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:  Education: Associates or Bachelors degree in a health care-related field required;  Experience: Minimum of three years coding experience in an acute-care hospital setting required.
License/Registration Required: CCS, CPC-H, CPC, CDIP, or CCDS; RHIT/RHIA accepted but must obtain CDI/Coding specific credential within 1-year of hireOther: Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS Coding Guidelines, 3M Encoder system;
Strong knowledge of DRG (MS-DRG and APR DRG) systems;
Ability to use independent judgement and to manage and impart confidential information
Advanced knowledge of medical coding, electronic medical record systems, coding systems
Ability to analyze and solve problems, independently and as a group
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy compliance issues related to medical coding and documentation
Knowledge of current and developing issues and trends in diagnosis and procedure code assignment
Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and disease processes.
Reviews medical records of targeted DRG’s to analyze for optimal DRG assignment or other reviews as needed.
Proficient user of EPIC, CERNER, 3M 360, CAC, 3M HDM and 3M Encoder
Proficient with Microsoft office applications;
Must be able to work at onsite as needed;
Must complete tasks with integrity and compliance
Must have outcomes that comply with all applicable coding and billing rules, regulations, laws, etc.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Corrected vision and hearing to normal range and ability to discern color; eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Full range of body motion including sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 10 pounds; repetitive motion.
