Introduction

This is a Remote position.

JOB SUMMARY:

Key member of the coding education program known as Thrive.  This program collaborates with physicians and Advanced Practice Practitioners (APP) to ensure they are appropriately educated on E/M coding and documentation guidelines upon hire. Collaborates with the Physician Support Specialists to ensure the providers have the tools needed to appropriately document and code E/M visits.  Works in conjunction with the Compliance Coders when coding concerns are identified through annual coding audits.

Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Provider Education Manager, this position will provide the educational support needed for new physicians, APPs, and scribes to feel confident as they as they begin clinical documentation and coding of patient visits.  This position will also provide support as needed when remedial education is requested by existing physicians, APPs, and scribes. As a result of this education program, the Provider Education Specialist will ensure that new physicians, APPs, and scribes are knowledgeable as to requirements for E/M documentation, CPT and ICD-10 coding and billing medical services and continue to be a resource as needed.

 

Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Perform new physician and APP orientation program for CPT/ICD-10 coding and documentation
  • Perform new scribe orientation program for CPT/ICD-10 coding and documentation
  • Work in conjunction with the compliance coding specialist to provide support and education to providers identified as under-coders during routine E/M coding audits.
  • Prepares requested reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing relevant information obtained through education, and other educational activities.
  • Engage and educate providers about the 2021 AMA Documentation Guidelines, CPT and ICD-10 coding guidelines.
  • Conduct physician, APP and scribe coding and documentation education classes as needed/requested.
  • WQ In-basket Messages: Completes and follows up on missing Information from Physicians when the information provided does not support the services rendered.
  • Perform analysis and interpret visits routed to WQ’s (Help Modifier and L5 visits)
  • Serves as support for staff and peers for educational and professional skills within the onboarding process.
  • Compiles and reports educational review results to the Provider Education Manager
  • Educate new providers, as assigned, in documentation and coding to ensure documentation meets appropriate coding levels
  • Responsible for remaining up to date with all E/M Documentation Guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Qualified Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Exemplifies OrthoVirginia’s values – excellence, compassion, and unity
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with 5 to 7 years’ experience working as a credentialed coder, preferably in a medical practice
  • Licensing, certification/degree as one of the following: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC) preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of CPT and ICD coding principles and guidelines
  • Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid rules for documentation of billed services
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required including experience auditing
  • Ability to exercise initiative, problem-solving and decision-making to effectively plan, prioritize, and complete projects/tasks with little supervision in a fast paced, changing environment
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective professional working relationships with physicians, advanced practice providers, administration, and team members
  • Advanced working experience in Microsoft Office including Excel (formulas, pivot tables, dashboards, etc.)
  • Exceptional written and strong verbal communication skills: face to face, email, written correspondence, telephone

  • Participates in professional developments efforts to ensure currency in health care policies and trends
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions
  • Travel to regional offices will be required

 

Typical Physical Demands:

 

Position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking. Employee will occasionally have to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. Normal visual acuity and hearing required. Employee will work under stressful conditions and work irregular hours. Employee may have frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Education Qualifications

  • Licensing, certification/degree as one of the following: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC) preferred

Compensation/Benefits

$22.32 to $33.47 per hour
