Since 1952, Forrest General Hospital, located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, has been a leader in medical excellence in south Mississippi. The hospital has grown from the original 90‐bed facility into a 547‐bed, Level II Regional Trauma Center and hospital system. Job Description

Job Summary:

Performs final coding on records. Interacts with physicians or physician’s offices staff as necessary to obtain clinical information needed to accurately assign codes.  Uses the EPIC software to review the electronic medical record and to enter diagnosis and procedure codes for billing based on the documentation. Works cooperatively with other team members. Performs clerical duties as required or as designated by the Director or Supervisor.  Demonstrates knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with the patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs.

Inpatient coders serve as a resource to HIM, Business Services and other departments with questions related to inpatient coding and the applicable ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding guidelines. They’re also responsible for ensuring proper DRG assignments as appropriate.

Outpatient coders serve as a resource to HIM, Business Services and other departments with questions related to outpatient coding and the applicable ICD-10-CM and CPT coding guidelines. They’re also responsible for ensuring proper APC assignments as appropriate.

Clinic coders serve as a resource to HIM, Business Services and other departments with questions related to clinic coding and the applicable ICD-10-CM and CPT/E&M coding guidelines.

Performance Expectations:

Demonstrates ability to code records according to set productivity standards.  Demonstrates the ability to work edits received from patient accounts.  Demonstrates the ability to abstract (i.e., correct codes, dates, surgeon information, and discharge status) all records within 4 days of patient discharge to ensure timely reimbursement.  Demonstrates the ability to maintain performance standards set by the department.

Mental Demands:

Ability to type and be familiar with the rules of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.  Must have the ability to use a computer, copier, telephone, printer, and fax. Proficient ability in Windows and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook. Knowledge of DNV standards and other regulatory systems is essential.  Working knowledge of correct ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT coding procedures and medical terminology is necessary.  Must have a high energy level.

Required Qualifications



High school diploma or equivalent.


 Inpatient- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, COC or CIC required.

Outpatient- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CCA, CPC, COC, CPC-A or CIC  required.

Clinic- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CCA, CPC, COC, CPC-A or CIC required.


Preferred Qualifications



Associate degree in a medical related field is  preferred.
