Job Description

Under the direction of the Health Information Management Director and in partnership with the Assistant Medical Director of Documentation Quality, leads the coordination and collaboration of health information, overall clinical documentation and inpatient ICD coding within the HCMC systems to ensure an effective and consistent reflection of the care provided and while ensuring compliance, quality and financial viability (ex: coding, billing, charges and capture, core measures, Joint Commission, government and non-
government payor requirements, etc.). Responsible for the management and strategic direction of the clinical documentation improvement and hospital billing inpatient coding area to ensure coding accuracy, timeliness and maximum equitable reimbursement from all carriers. Hospital billing coding should be completed and processed within the timeframes established by HCMC’s revenue cycle management as well as backlogs and rejections are minimized. Oversight will be required in the following functions: medical record documentation, archiving, coding quality/accuracy audits, and reporting. Other management responsibilities include: strategic planning, budget preparation and oversight; hiring, disciplining, and terminating employees; staff development to ensure that this area meets the service needs of the organization. Serves as a resource and assists with organizational compliance on HIPAA Privacy standards, payor regulations, and JCAHO standards. Ensures appropriate procedures and policies are created and revised as needed and provides direction to the organization regarding the implementation of these policies. Works collaboratively as a key participant in the oversight of Epic and 3M Coding Reimbursement system enhancements to ensure efficient and effective processes and workflows in the professional coding area Provides leadership to the Clinical documentation supervisor/specialists and the Hospital billing inpatient coding supervisor/ coders with the goal to provide an active concurrent review, feedback and education, to improve documentation of all conditions and treatments in the inpatient medical record, to ensure an accurate reflection of the patient condition in the associated MS-DRG assignments, case-mix index, severity of illness & risk of mortality profiling, and reimbursement.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in nursing, business and /or healthcare administration, health information management or health information technology

Three (3) years Healthcare management experience with supervisory/ management responsibilities

Three years of experience working with documentation to meet quality, financial and regulatory requirements

– OR, An approved equivalent combination of education and experience

CERTIFICATION LEVEL:
Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS)

Eligible Credentialed as a Registered Health Information Administrator or Technician or eligible

Education Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in nursing, business and /or healthcare administration, health information management or health information technology
