Job Description

Collaborates extensively with physicians, nursing staff, other patient caregivers, and medical records coding staff to improve quality and completeness of documentation of care provided and coded.  Facilitates concurrent modifications to clinical documentation to insure commensurate reimbursement of clinical severity and services rendered to patients with a DRG based payors (Medicare, Medicaid) as well as commercial payors.  Supports timely, accurate and complete documentation of clinical information used for measuring and reporting physician and facility outcomes.  Understands  Case Mix Index, Severity of Illness and Risk of Mortality in relation to ICD10 CM code set. Educates all members of the patient care team on an ongoing basis.

Participation in daily IDM meetings. Analysis of provider query responses and opportunities for documentation improvement in the Inpatient and Outpatient setting,  This position works closely with Quality Management, Revenue Cycle departments, Finance, and Corporate Compliance to achieve system targets, initiatives, and integrity.  Performs other duties as assigned. The CDC serves as an educational resource for all internal and external customers related to compliant documentation for DRG revenue assurance, compliance, quality outcomes and ICD10.

Required Qualifications

Experience:  Minimum 5 years acute-care hospital documentation specialist or Inpatient Coding and leadership experience required 

License/Registration:  AHIMA credential of RHIT or RHIA or CCS or CDIP or ACDIS CCDS required; Licensed RN or Credentialed Coder (as above) preferred           

Other:  Expert knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10 classification systems/coding guidelines;   Expert knowledge of MS-DRGs, APR DRGs, HCC, MCC/CC, and their impact on Provider and Hospital agencies in regards to Quality Data Reporting and Financial Reimbursement and Regulatory Compliance; Excellent and positive interpersonal, verbal and written communication and presentation skills; Able to train coders, clinicians, physicians, physician office staff, and long term care coding staff; Proficient with basic office equipment, including PC and encoder; Must be able to work at onsite as needed; Must able to think critically and creatively to positively problem solve;  Must complete tasks with integrity and compliance.  Must have outcomes that comply with all applicable coding and billing rules, regulations, laws, etc. 

Education Qualifications

Education: Bachelor degree in Healthcare related field (BSN or RHIA) or 5 years Coding/ CDI experience, RN CCDS or CDIP
