Position Summary

The Research Quality Control Specialist I is responsible for medical record abstraction for the SEER Patterns of Care (POC) study. The Research Quality Control Specialist I works directly with the Research Project Coordinator, Research Quality Control Specialist II and Research Associate II to ensure that data collection for this project complies with the specialized requirements of the POC study. This position will provide expert knowledge and guidance to the research team for studies that assess the incorporation of state-of-the-art cancer treatments into clinical practice and the extent to which cancer patients receive such treatments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Attends the POC study abstractor training held at the onset of the POC study to discuss uniform and standardization of procedures for sampling cases and for coding variables.

• Assists in the identification and retrieval of all identified medical records according to contract specifications, including physician offices and inpatient and outpatient medical records.

• Abstracts medical record of all variables on the POC study data collection form.

• Coordinates with the Research Project Coordinator to meet timeline deliverables

• Attends all POC study meetings as required.

• Travels to facilities within the CRGC catchment area as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in health care related field preferred or combination of college-level education and work

• Must be credentialed as a Certified Tumor Registrar

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in a broad range of cancer registry functions, including case identification, abstracting, coding, and quality control activities.

• Excellent knowledge of cancer identification, coding and abstracting procedures, cancer disease process, and national and state cancer reporting and coding standards (SEER, NPCR, and California Cancer Registry) as they pertain to research studies.

• Demonstrated ability to perform a detailed analysis of complex problems and present solutions.

• Excellent verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work with software programs that include and MS Access.

• Must have available transportation and the ability to commute to various locations other than the assigned office.

Important Information

• This is a part-time (20 hours per week), benefits-eligible position.

• This is a time-limited position and is expected to last from June 1, 2021 through February 28, 2022.
