The HIM manager is responsible for directing the organization’s health information management (HIM) department. This includes strategic alignment and daily oversight, management of transaction and process-based revenue cycle functions with ongoing improvement to key revenue cycle indicators. This supervisory position is responsible for daily functional management of programs and services, and the measured results for all aspects of Coding in the Health Information Management Department. The supervisor demonstrates active support of the Mission, Vision and Core Values of Kearny County Hospital. Supervisors are expected to perform direct support service functions and activities as needed to achieve unit objectives.

Job Description

-Using a hands-on approach ensures all accounts are coded accurately and timely by providing proactive oversight and direction as well as being able to perform select duties for the HIM department.
-Responsible for staff in the HIM department; including hiring, scheduling, training, supervising, evaluating, developing, motivating, disciplining and retaining employees. Responsible for developing excellence in the team of employees in the unit as well as maintaining a professional attitude with everyone.
-Participates in the development of the operating budget for the HIM Department that is consistent with the Hospital’s Strategic Plan. Monitors expenditures, proactively identifies potential budget variances, and recommends effective solutions to improve budget performance.
-Develops, implements and enforces policies and procedures in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and sound business and coding practices.
-Organizes and leads intra-departmental efforts to maximize operational efficiency and optimize reimbursement, as well as monitors denials and provides related education to various departments as needed.
-Reviews all statistical reports to monitor trends, determine operational deficiencies, and implement corrective action plans as necessary.
-Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of Departmental/Unit programs and services to assess the need for new or expanded services.
-Demonstrates highly developed verbal and written communication skills, excellent analytical and problem solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple complex tasks.
-Assures that confidentiality of patient information is maintained without exception and handles customer complaints within organization guidelines.
-Attends all required meetings and activities, maintaining a professional affiliation to stay abreast of current trends and changes.
-Serves as Privacy Officer and addresses HIPAA violations according to guidelines. Trains facility on all related issues.
-Ensures that all suspected or known incidents of unauthorized use or releases of PHI are thoroughly investigated and reported to appropriate agencies/personnel as outlined in KCH policy.
-Serves as Corporate Compliance Officer (See Corporate Compliance Officer job description).
-Responsible for the Critical Access Hospital Chargemaster.
-Responsible for provider enrollment/credentialing.
-Exhibits excellent leadership and self-direction, good judgment in handling difficult situations and good organizational, time management, interpersonal and conflit resolution skills.
-Collaborates with the Business Office Manager.
-Demonstrates proficiency at hospital wide and/or department specific computer software and technology.

Required Qualifications

-RHIT or RHIA preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred in Business Management or Healthcare Administration.
-Five years of progressive Revenue Cycle experience and two years coding management experience preferred. Prefer knowledge of Critical Access Hospitals and Rural Health Clinics
-Acting with integrity, analyzing and interpreting financial data, computer literacy, gathering needed information, delegating and supporting teams, evaluating decisions/solutions, improving work process, making effective decisions. Excellent human relations and oral/written communications skills. Measuring customer service and meeting customer needs. Partnering with customers/others, promoting KCH mission, vision and values. Utilizing communication channels and Valuing diversity.
-CCS or CCS-P preferred.
