Job Description

Under the direction of the Director Medical Coding, the Medical Coding Specialist will review, analyze and accurately assign CPT/HCPCS codes and/or ICD-10 codes as appropriate, by abstracting pertinent information from outpatient primary care medical records.  The coding specialist will review patient medical records to ensure that the medical practitioner has adequately and appropriately documented the service provided and will assign all relevant codes using their knowledge of documentation and coding guidelines to achieve and maintain compatibility with regulatory and payer documentation and billing requirements and standards.  This position collaborates with Medical Coding Director to provide education and training to medical practitioners and other staff.  This position reviews and resolves documentation and coding issues and participates in process improvements for the primary care specialty. 

* Responsible for the daily abstract coding of primary care encounters while maintaining JFCS accuracy and productivity levels per JFCS practice guidelines;

* Understands and utilizes medical practitioner provider query process for clarification of clinical data when encountering conflicting or ambiguous information

* Accurately codes and abstracts all primary care outpatient records utilizing ICD-10-CM and CPT codes

* Performs claim denial reviews on outpatient encounters to validate the International Classification of Diseases Manual (ICD-10-CM) and provide feedback to the healthcare professional and management

* Educates healthcare professionals and others in the use of technical coding guidelines and practices and proper documentation techniques to maximize accuracy, completeness, and compliance with acceptable standards of practice and coding guidelines

* Maintains knowledge of current industry coding and compliance guidelines and regulations; Maintains required coding certification

* Maintains knowledge of current documentation and coding information related to payer reimbursement regulations

* Uses all applicable rules and regulatory guidelines with regard to the confidential nature of the  information contained in health records
Performs other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned

Required Qualifications

* Certificate or associates degree in medical coding or related degree; 

* Certified Professional Coder (CPC or CCS) certification, required.

* Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card without restriction(s)

* Valid AZ Drivers License

* Minimum two years of primary care ambulatory medical record abstract coding experience;

* At least one year of Physician E/M Auditing experience;

* Ability to pass a pre-employment exam;

* Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II coding and the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (e.g., DSM V);

* Must have understanding of advanced principles and practices of medical record keeping; advanced medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, as well as the states, sequence, progression and description of diseases as they apply to medical record coding;

* Knowledge of appropriate methods for auditing and reviewing information for quality control purposes;

* Must have conducted chart reviews using the 1997 E&M Guidelines;

* Must have conducted chart reviews of outpatient medical records to verify the appropriateness of diagnostic codes selection and medical record abstracts;

* Ability to work with physicians and others to ensure complete and accurate information and optimal reimbursement based on coding and abstracting of medical records;

* Medical practitioner training experience in a healthcare setting, preferred;
Previous experience interacting with external coding auditors, preferred;

* Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;

Education Qualifications

* Certificate or associates degree in medical coding or related degree. Minimum verifiable high school or GED.

* Certified Professional Coder (CPC or CCS) certification, required.
