We are seeking a Coding Quality Analyst – Inpatient to:

  • Assess the overall quality of coding on any accounts submitted to billing.
  • Review medical records prior to release and alert management of any potential coding or DRG issues.
  • Be responsible for some of the daily operational activities, answering coding questions, performing Quality Audits and training new employees.

Education:

Minimum – High School diploma or equivalent and Medical Coding Program Graduate

Preferred – Associate or bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field

Work Experience:

Minimum – Three (3) years of progressive acute care hospital inpatient coding experience to include experience coding Medicare DRG’s

Preferred –

  • More than five years of inpatient coding experience in an academic medical center.
  • Experience with coding quality improvement projects
  • Training experience

Licenses and Certifications:

Minimum – Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)

Preferred – Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Training in the use of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems
  • Formal training in reimbursement systems–IPPS, DRGs,etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of, but not limited to, current Official Coding Guidelines and methodologies, MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, the ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems and conventions.
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and pathophysiology, pharmacology and ancillary test results
  • Extensive knowledge of complex medical and coding concepts encountered in an Academic Medical Center and Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory requirements of Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) and other payer requirements
  • Strong communication skills (interpersonal, verbal and written).
  • Proficiency in Office applications (Excel and Access) preferred
  • Proven skills in use of encoder grouping and abstracting software
  • Excellent organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to exercise good judgment

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary: Ability to lift up to 10 pounds maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers and small tools.  Although a sedentary job is defined as one, which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time, 1.0 FTE position that is scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Hours may vary based upon the needs of the department.
