Introduction

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, an 839-bed regional medical center, is the among the largest acute care public health systems in Florida. With more than 6,000 staff and over 700 volunteers, it is one of Sarasota County’s largest employers. A community hospital founded in 1925, Sarasota Memorial is governed by the nine-member elected Sarasota County Public Hospital Board. It is a full-service health system, with specialized expertise in heart, vascular, cancer, and neuroscience services, as well as a network of outpatient centers, long-term care, and rehabilitation among its many programs. Sarasota Memorial is the only provider of Level II trauma services, obstetrical services and Level III neonatal intensive care in Sarasota County.

Job Description

Accountable for the strategy and direction of Health Information Management, including the Legal Medical Record, Coding, Scan Center, Release of Information, Transcription, Chart Completion, Physician Notification and Suspension, Quality, and Records Custodian for court appearances. Knowledge of regulatory areas such as HIPAA, ACHA, The Joint Commission, Patient Safety Goals, Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations, Coding Standards and Guidelines, and other applicable regulatory standards. Develops and recommends goals, objectives, physician and patient satisfaction initiatives, and system enhancements in conjunction with organizational strategic initiatives. Mentors and leads team members to produce positive outcomes. Builds strong positive relationships with key individuals: physicians, patients, clinical staff, directors, administrators, and the Revenue Cycle Team. Provides professional-level educational and informational presentations to physicians, staff, management, and the Board.

Collaborates with Clinical and Business Systems and the Chief Medical Officer to grow and enhance a sophisticated and complex electronic medical record, driving physician and nurse satisfaction. Assists the Executive Director of Quality Improvement to improve the accuracy of quality reporting while maintaining coding standards. Establishes teamwork with the Director of Risk Management/Privacy Officer to drive adherence to appropriate medical record access, system access audits, and response to chart reviews by regulatory agencies. Manages Medical Record Committee in collaboration with the physician chairperson. Ensures the following HIM performance indicators are met: discharged not final coded, delinquency rate, coding accuracy, the release of information turnaround time, transcription quality and turnaround time, quality and integrity of the scanned medical record, and cost per unit of service.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) with a Bachelor’s degree or a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years HIM management experience in a complex electronic medical record systems environment of a large, acute care hospital is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Management experience at a large community hospital system with multiple locations is preferred.
  • Certification in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) and/or background in informatics is preferred.
  • Project management or large system implementation experience preferred.
