Job Description


  • Oversees and coordinates IP hospital coding workflow, monitoring account and claim edit work queues and re-assigning IP coding professionals as needed, including contract coding professionals when utilized.
  • Provides clarification to inpatient coding professionals regarding AHA coding rules/principles and application to ensure consistency within the department
  • Research and address coding questions and provides query development support for inpatient coding professionals.
  • Assists with research of diseases and new technologies for appropriate ICD-10-CM/PCS diagnosis and procedure code assignment.
  • Provides training of new inpatient coding professionals, working with them to meet/exceed department coding accuracy and productivity standards.
  • Collaborates with network coding manager in the development, implementation and maintenance of coding department policies and procedures.
  • Identifies educational opportunities and provides feedback on these areas to the Network Coding Manager and/or Network Director, CDCI.
  • Monitors productivity for IP network coding professionals providing weekly and monthly reports to both the staff and the coding leadership team.
  • Processes PHC4 reports on a quarterly basis.
  • Conducts employee performance assessments, manages employee timecards, and coordinates vacation and holiday scheduling.


  • Sitting for up to 7 hours per day, 3 hours at a time. Repetitive arm/finger use retrieving/viewing computerized patient medical record and abstracting of patient information. Extended periods of vision use for reviewing computerized patient records, abstracting of patient information, approximately 7 hours per day, 3 hours at a time.  Hearing as it relates to normal conversation.  Occasionally may be required to use upper extremities to lift up to 10 lbs.; stoop, bend, or reach to retrieve resource materials and/or paper records in accordance with department downtime policy; use of wheel cart to and from Medical Records Department.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years inpatient coding experience in acute care setting required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching hospital setting preferred. Past auditing experience or strong training background in coding and reimbursement preferred. Previous experience with EPIC health information system and 3M encoding system preferred.

Education Qualifications

  • Formal HIM education with national certification RHIA, RHIT and/or CCS coding certification required from the American Health Information management Association.  Candidates with 5 years experience and certification eligible within one year considered. If candidate is RHIA, RHIT and/or CCS-eligible, candidate will be expected to obtain their AHIMA credential within two years of hire date to retain position with St. Luke’s University Health Network.
