Part-Time Medical Coding Instructor

Edmonds Community College, Lynnwood, Washington

Edmonds Community College is now recruiting for a part-time medical coding instructor.  Classes are taught online with a weekly, on-campus, instructor-led skills lab. This position will begin immediately upon hire with faculty training, development, and mentoring. Class instruction begins July 1, 2019.

Job Description

Medical Coding faculty members are responsible for the following:

  • Teaching ICD-10, CPT, and Advanced Coding courses in the Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Certificate program
  • Preparing students for AAPC’s CPC and AHIMA’s CCS-P certification exams
  • Providing leadership to a diverse student body in both the online classroom and the campus-based skills lab
  • Developing curriculum
  • Preparing teaching materials
  • Developing and assessing student learning outcomes
  • Evaluating student work, assigning grades, maintaining required records
  • Supporting student success through consultation/mentoring

Required Qualifications

  • Current (plus at least three, previous, consecutive years’) full-time employment as a certified professional coder with AAPC’s CPC or AHIMA’s RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P credential
  • Excellent speaking, writing, listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of medical coding computer applications and ability to apply technology to coding curriculum
  • Ability to work effectively with supervisors, colleagues, staff, and students as part of an educational team
  • Ability to meet with students in the on-campus skills lab for 90-minutes one afternoon or evening per week during scheduled quarters

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated medical coding teaching or trainer experience
  • Five, previous, consecutive years’ full-time employment as a certified professional coder with AAPC’s CPC or AHIMA’s RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P credential
  • Demonstrated medical coding teaching or trainer experience
  • Current CPC-I certification or willingness and eligibility to become a CPC-I
  • Experience with multiple approaches to teaching and learning, such as incorporating a variety of technologies into the classroom, teaching online or hybrid classes, or using other innovative techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including a wide range of student preparedness, backgrounds, and life experiences
  • Experience with educational technology and online teaching methods 

Education Qualifications

Certified professional coder with AAPC’s CPC or AHIMA’s RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P credential

Compensation/Benefits

Salary is dependent upon contract load and mode of instruction. A standard five-credit “lecture mode” class would be approximately $4,260.07 per quarter.
