Job Description

The Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist works collaboratively with Medical, Nursing, ancillary staff and Case Managers to improve the quality of chart documentation and to accurately reflect a patient’s severity of illness and risk of mortality. The incumbent develops strategies to meet operational standards and manage clinical utilization and cost. The work entails operation and workflow redesign, reimbursement enhancement, clinical documentation improvement, compliance validation and identification of cost efficiency opportunities. The incumbent is responsible for utilizing clinical and coding knowledge to analyze and evaluate concurrent documentation in relation to the level of service provided to patients. Through extensive interaction with HCMC staff and health team members, the incumbent is responsible for facilitating modifications to overall quality and completeness of medical record documentation. Interfaces with Health Information Management to develop data into information for team decision-making and improved outcomes. Conducts training/education programs for HCMC staff and physicians in clinical documentation improvement methodologies, data analysis, work simplification techniques, as well as other subjects related to clinical documentation improvement. This position will stay abreast of documentation opportunities that affect reimbursement and clinical data.

Provides leadership for the development and integration of the Clinical Documentation Improvement program with other existing Henry County Medical Center services in support of the strategic vision of the organization.
Works collaboratively with organizational leadership, nursing administration, clinical leaders, department managers, and medical staff leadership while implementing the Clinical Documentation Improvement program.
Utilize clinical expertise and business logic to support Coding in resolutions for retrospective approval for denied claims and using communication skills to work with Physicians to be proactive in improving documentation gaps.
Collaborates with other departments to identify opportunities and promote accurate clinical documentation
Works collaboratively with the department director to support regulatory agency standards and requirements have been met
Responsible for establishing and maintaining productive relationships with Medical, HIM, Nursing, ancillary staff and Case Managers
Oversees educational efforts to promote conformance with program goals and objectives
Participates in the development and implementation of data management systems
Utilizes tools and quality management processes to continuously assess and improve Clinical Documentation Improvement services. Participates in QI activities and identifies and reports issues for improvement
Assumes responsibility for personal growth and development by attendance and/or participation in in-services and continuing education programs
Performs other duties as assigned to support the strategic vision of Henry County Medical Center and enhance quality, utilization, service delivery and customer satisfaction
Actively participates in the promotion of customer service activities and goal achievement

Required Qualifications

4 years experience in an Acute Care setting in at least one of the following roles is required:

CDI Specialist, Registered Nurse with experience in Critical Care, Medical/Surgical or Emergency Department, Level 1 Coder with extensive analytical experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP), Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) in the State of Tennessee

Baccalaureate degree in appropriate health-related or management field is preferred.
