Director of Health Information Management

Job Summary

Responsible for the development and implementation of strategies which support the operations and functions within the Health Information Management (HIM) Department.  Provides leadership and oversight of all operational and financial decisions related to the HIM department.  This position leads functional areas which include Chart Management, Master Patient Index (MPI) Maintenance, Health Record Integrity, Document Imaging, Birth Certificate processing, Release of Information, MyChart Helpdesk, Hospital Coding, and other related areas as assigned.

Minimum Job Qualifications

Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred

Education

Bachelor’s Degree Required

Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management or Bachelor’s degree in another health-related field plus a RHIA certification

Minimum Experience

Seven (7) years experience as a HIM professional in a hospital environment with (5) years leadership/management experience in a similar capacity; advanced knowledge of Revenue Cycle Operations, Hospital Coding; previous experience in a large healthcare organization with an electronic health record

Essential Tasks

Responsible for developing, implementing, and oversight of effective and consistent operational policies, processes, tools, and educational materials within all HIM functional areas.
Facilitates the development and maintenance of a legal medical record (LMR) policy to encompass all applicable entities.
Collaborates with the appropriate committees, departments, and individuals to support the HIM/Coding department’s goals and objectives. Actively participates in the following committees – Utilization Review/Medical Record Committee, Government Reimbursement-Acute/Post Acute Compliance Committee, Privacy & Security Compliance, I.T. Shared Oversight Governance, MyChart Steering Committee, Revenue Cycle Advisory, Forms Control Task Force.
Monitors and provides appropriate oversight of the ongoing financial and operational performance of the HIM/Coding Department.
Leads the establishment and implementation of KPIs for HIM/Coding functions; ensures the implementation of action plans when necessary; assesses metrics annually and as needed to reflect industry standards or make necessary adjustments; reviews and monitors outcomes and provides recognition as appropriate
Identifies area for improvement within the HIM/Coding Department and utilizes the appropriate resources and tools to lead the design and implementation.
Oversees the performance of vendors supporting the HIM Department – Release of Information (ROI), Transcription, Document Storage, Contract Coding.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of state and federal laws, licensure, accreditation requirements specific to HIM and Hospital Coding to ensure hospital compliance.
Ensures the confidentiality of medical information is maintained throughout the organization and that the release and use of protected information is in accordance with NGHS policies and applicable law; must collaborate with the Privacy Department to keep ROI policies and forms current.
Works with peers across the Revenue Cycle to manage and prevent third-party denials; manages billing edits assigned to the HIM Coding team and coordinates with departments throughout the Revenue Cycle to escalate issues related to process or needs for improvement; works with the Patient Financial Services department to identify trends and improve denials management.
Focuses on relationship-building and facilitating productive communication with Revenue Cycle peers and other key departments within the organization.
Creates a work environment for staff that fosters the Core Values of NGHS, team-building, personal and departmental goals, coaching, constructive feedback, and engagement of every member of the team.
Establishes Key Performance Indicators for the HIM Operations and Hospital Coding teams to promote optimal performance and organizational success.
Collaborates with Information Technology Services on system and program enhancements to promote efficiency and improved workflows for HIM Operations and Hospital Coding.
Performs any special assignments as requested.
