The Medical Coding Specialist will work collaboratively with the coding team on daily coding responsibilities, including but not limited to high level interventional radiology procedures.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:
·         Identify and report correct code selection from physician documentation to include but not limited to chart notes, abstracting from medical records documentation, medical diagnostic and/or interventional reports, ensuring compliant coding selections are reported, as defined by regulatory agencies, various third-party payers, and IMP coding guidelines

·         Reviews NLP engine coding to determine accuracy of and applies the correct coding conventions to patient encounters and interventional and diagnostic radiology services

·         Identifies provider specific educational needs relative to professional coding and documentation

·         Works coding related denials, follow up, and coding related projects as assigned

·         Research new codes and carrier policies as assigned

·         Act as a resource for non-coding manager and staff for queries related to coding conventions, compliance questions, and client coding questions

·         Assists in the delivery of appropriate specialty specific coding education for providers within their respective departments and assigned clients

·         Attends and participates in all coding related educational activities, as directed by the VP of Coding and Compliance and disseminates applicable information to non-coding managers and staff as it relates to assigned clients


Travel Responsibilities:
·         Medical Coding Specialists will work from the Milwaukee, WY office and be based in Milwaukee; they will be required to travel to the Peoria, IL, office for onboarding and any travel that relates to educational seminar requirements (generally a couple days once every other year).  A valid driver’s license may be required.


Required Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:  
·         5-7 years coding experience

·         Minimum 3-5 years of interventional radiology coding experience

·         Advanced knowledge of ICD-9 CM and CPT 4 coding convention

·         Working knowledge of ICD-10 CM

·         Proficient in MIPS – Radiology Measures

·         Familiar with coding software (e.g. Optum 360, 3M, Flashcode)

Desired Experience and Traits:
·         IR experience with neuro (head/neck) and also angioplasties and stents

·         Strong written and verbal communication skills

·         Positive, up-beat attitude and personality

·         Ability to work in a virtual setting with minimum supervision

Education Qualifications

Educational Requirements:
  • College experience or degree preferred

·         Medical coding certification, such as RCC, RCCB, CIRCC, CPC, or CCS-P
