The 2017 CPT changes pose some challenges. There are significant updates this year. For example, new codes have been created to identify code pairs that have been determined to be performed together 75 percent or more of the time, resulting in referral to the CPT Editorial Panel for bundling.
There are also new codes to describe procedures such as cryoblation of phantom limb pain as well as quite a few extensions to existing Category III codes that are not ready for inclusion in the Category 1 codes.
FHIMA’s December 7, CPT Updates Coding Roundtable is a great opportunity to meet the following objectives:
1) Become familiar with the most significant changes and new codes, including the newly bundled services with examples
2) Discuss the changes in global values from “stand-alone (global concept does not apply)” to “Code related to another service and always included in the global period of the other service” for services that will be changed to add-on codes
3) Discuss the most significant codes that will be deleted from Category I and Category III
4) Review examples of the impact of key changes to reimbursement
